Apotheca Flower Shoppe in Goffstown once again was the host of an artist reception, this time for the talented local children’s book illustrators Smells Like Crayons. Organized by Sandy Whipple of the Goffstown Public Library, the event was well attended and brought many new faces to the downtown area. While being entertained by the remarkably talented 11-year old Mason Foley on acoustic guitar, the small crowd enjoyed the delightful artwork that covered nearly every inch of the gallery.
Smells Like Crayons met through the New England Society of Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators in 2002, and have been meeting once a month ever since. Jane Tentas, Goffstown resident and requent Apotheca visitor, explained about the event, “We were looking for a venue to show all our work, and I’ve been to other artist receptions here. We felt our art really fit Apotheca.”

Whipple has been very busy this summer organizing cultural events for the library that often take place out in the community. Recently Apotheca hosted an Open Mic night, which was well attended and may become a monthly event this fall. Apotheca supported the event by providing the venue and by offering a beverage discount during the show when presented with a Goffstown Library Card. Goffstown Ace Hardware will be hosting an event later in the summer that will include 10% off live plant purchases with a library card. As Whipple says, “There is so much more value to that card than a book or CD.” The Library is able to plan many events that otherwise would not fit into their existing space because of the support of St. Lawrence and St. Matthews churches, and businesses like Sully’s, Viksters Pizza, Super Suds Car Wash, Jacques Flowers, Empire Pools, and White Duck car wash. A very big speical thank you to Goffstown Main Street Program, Ace Hardware, the Friends of the Goffstown Library, and Apotheca!
Tentas was pleased with the show and said, “I think it was a success. Goffstown is very supportive of the arts, and this was a great experience!”
