Joyce and Bob Ray of Dunbarton volunteered at the Asian Rural Institute in Japan from April to August, 2010. Participants from 16 Southeast Asian and African countries learned organic farming and leadership skills in a nine month program. They then returned to their villages to share their knowledge.
At ARI, staff, volunteers and participants work together to raise 90 % of their food. People represent a variety of ethnic backgrounds and religions. While working, playing and sharing, they form strong bonds.
The experience was a crash course in sustainability for the Rays. The work was challenging, and they have a new respect for soil. Their presentation highlights the ARI training focus "that we may live together."
