Dunbarton Garden Club Announces New DGC Board

The annual Dunbarton Garden Club pot luck Christmas party was recently held at the home of Diana & Michael Driscoll. Over 50 members and spouses attended the party where President Tom Groleau announced the new DGC Board for 2012/2013. New President Tom Cusano was handed the club trowel and they also welcomed Vice President Jackie Brough, Secretary Scott Kuhn, Treasurer Annette Kuhn and Librarian Gail Martel. A Yankee Swap followed the elections. A great time was had by all.

Dunbarton Garden Club Christmas Wreath Party

The annual Dunbarton Garden Club wreath making party took place Saturday morning at the home of Gail and Leo Martel as members assembled 30 wreaths.

The Dunbarton Garden Club created beautiful Christmas wreaths to adorn the Town Offices, Library, Fire/Police department, Transfer Station and the bandstand on the Commons. In addition, the Historical Societyʼs blacksmith shop, the Dunbarton churches and cemeteries also received wreaths as part of the Dunbarton Garden Clubʼs holiday gift to the community.

Daffodil Public Planting Day Announced

Circle Saturday, October 29, at 8 am (Rain Date Sunday October 30) on your calendar to join your friends and neighbors from the Dunbarton Garden Club for Public Planting Day. Weʼll be planting daffodil bulbs on the Town Common, around the town center, along our portion of the John Stark Scenic Byway and other areas around historical Dunbarton. Meet at the Maple Lodge on School Street for coffee, juice and goodies and to form planting teams. Remember, we have gas-powered generators and power augers this year so weʼll make quick time of planting!

Please wear weather-appropriate clothes, bring work gloves and your own planting tools. Weʼll have protective haz-mat suits and plastic sleeves for additional protection from any poison ivy that may cross our paths.

After planting weʼll all meet back at the Maple Lodge for our Pot Luck Feast and beverages. The food gets better every year! Club Members and townsfolk are encouraged to drop off food and desserts at the Tavern any time Saturday morning before noon. Electricity is available for dishes requiring heat. Volunteers to staff the food tables are welcome!

Join Public Planting Day and help us increase the number of 45,000+ bulbs already in the ground so Dunbartonʼs 250th Anniversary in 2015 is Bloominʼ Spectacular!

Dunbarton Garden Club Announces 2011 Daffodil Selections

The Dunbarton Garden Club is once again offering special order premium Dutch bulbs in honor of the townʼs 250th anniversary in 2015. Now in the 7th year of a 10-year program, Daffodils for Dunbarton has planted more than 45,000 daffodils that we all enjoy every spring along our roads and in yards after a long winter.

Working hand in hand with the Dunbarton Historical Awareness Committee and local history buffs, careful choices are made to honor those whose contributions have made Dunbarton and New Hampshire a great place to live.

New - Stinson’s Salute is fragrant, multi-blooming, greenish-yellow with white highlights and a bowl-shaped cup of deep orange which deepens as it matures later in the season. The Stinson Family has been part of Dunbartonʼs history since its earliest years, and was also well represented in the New Hampshireʼs militia.

New - Harrisʼ Flock is a grouping of various yellow varieties with an extended bloom period of 4 weeks. Named for Dunbartonʼs first resident minister in 1789.

New - Governor Currier has white petals, golden-orange cup with a darker, melonorange, ruffled rim, is a bit fragrant and occasionally has multiple flowers per stem. Governor Moody Currier was raised on his motherʼs Dunbarton farm; the Currier Museum in Manchester is his legacy.

Returning this year is the General John Stark (1728-1822), a traditional jumbo yellow trumpet recognizing New Hampshireʼs own “Live Free or Die” patriot. Also the Molly Stark Mix (1737-1814) a mix of yellow, cream and white daffodils with accents of orange, red and pink centers and an extended bloom period of 4-6 weeks.

The order form also has information on tax-deductible year-round donations for public, memorial or “in honor of” plantings. Persons do not need to be from Dunbarton to be honored; and appropriate acknowledgements are sent to the families.

250th Anniversary Daffodils

As each of our communities celebrates their 250th Anniversary over these next years, one bright yellow thread follows from Goffstown in 2011, New Boston in 2013, through Weare in 2014 and gloriously into Dunbarton in 2015- daffodils!  Thousands of daffodils lining the General John Stark Scenic Byway.

The Daffodil Project began with the Dunbarton Garden Club, who have created an amazing display that other towns have begun to emulate.  This year the Dunbarton Team arrived in Goffstown with their pick axes, ready to teach the Goffstown Main Street Design Team how to quickly and efficiently plant 1,600 daffs.  Said Dunbarton Garden Club President Tom Groleau, “We sort of went down with our equipment and helped Main Street plant their 1,600 bulbs.  For Dunbarton, that’s a pretty modest amount, but it was a big deal for Goffstown!”

According to Goffstown Main Street Program Director Robbie Grady, “Dunbarton and Weare had already begun to plant daffodils in preparation for their towns' 250th birthdays.  At a meeting of the General John Stark Scenic Byway Council, the reps from those two towns were so enthusiastic, that our Main Street Design Team agreed to take on the project for here in the village.  We purchased our bulbs from the Goffstown Garden Club last fall.  The bulbs were purchased with funds donated in memory of one of our volunteers, Elizabeth Merrill, who passed away last August.  She was one of our original design volunteers, and had donated funds to our grant program, so we felt this was a fitting tribute.  "Once we started talking about daffodils, the Goffstown and Pinardville Lions clubs decided they, too, would plant them, and they planted at the popcorn stand, the county property, and throughout Pinardville.”

Daffodils grow readily in gardens or naturalized in fields and alongside the road. They are disease resistant and not eaten by deer, moles, or voles. Daffodils multiply without care. Plant 20 bulbs, and soon you'll have 30. Watch the colors explode each year!

Dunbarton Gardent Club April Meeting

The Dunbarton Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30 PM at the home of Lisa and Randy Bauer, 51 Mansion Road. Ely Osborne from Osborne's Agway will be bringing a variety of "must have" garden tools and she will also talk about how to clean rusty tools. In addition she will bring some seed starter kits.

Very interesting subjects this month, including Late Blooming Perennials Everyone Should Have, Invasive Plants vs. Native Plants, Starting a Vegetable Garden, Book Revies, and TWIG Upcoming Events.  I really love this newsletter and I strongly recommend that everyone take a look.  Paula Kovecses creates charming landscapes, but her monthly newsletter is special for everyone, even non-gardeners like me who just want to look at the pictures and dream!

Dunbarton Garden Club March Meeting

March meeting of the Dunbarton Garden Club The Dunbarton Garden Club will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 15th at 6:30 PM at the home of Tom and Karen Cusano on 10 Old Fort Lane. Robert Herrick from Stoneworks will speak about the history of stonewalls in our area, what you need to take into consideration when thinking about building a rock wall and the process of building walls. Club president Tom Groleau encourages members to bring their spouses to the meeting. The DGC is open to anyone interested in gardening and in volunteering to help beautify the community.
