Goffstown Garden Club prepares for Plant Sale

The Goffstown Community Garden Club is preparing for their upcoming Spring Plant Sale. If you have plants that are in need of separating and would like to donate them to the sale, we would gladly come and dig them up and take them away for a good cause. Monies raised from the plant sale go towards the GCGC Scholarship fund. The sale will be held May 19th on the Goffstown Common. Goffstown Community Garden Club Poster Contest Winner

Several months ago, the Goffstown Community Garden Club sponsored a Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest for the children of Bartlett Elementary and Maple Avenue Elementary.  Many NH Clubs contributed to the success of the National Garden Club, Inc.'s 2012 Poster contest.  Children were encouraged to create posters based on Smokey's fire prevention message, "Only YOU can Prevent Wildfires!" or Woodsy Owl's conservation message which is "Lend a Hand - Care for the Land!".

Over twenty-five Goffstown students submitted posters which were judged locally and the winning posters were forwarded to the State contest chairperson, who in turn sent the winners on to the Regional and National Chairpersons for judging.

The Goffstown Community Garden Club is proud to have one of the Regional winners, a second grade student at Maple Avenue Elementary School, who will be recognized during a ceremony by Gov. Lynch at the State House in Concord on April 18th. The Regional winner is Jennifer Kulick, a student in Mrs. Brown's class, congratulations Jennifer! The National winners are yet to be announced, and on a local level all students who participated in the contest will receive recognition at a later date.

Many thanks to the Principals of Bartlett and Maple Ave. for their great support of the students and the contest. As a member of the Goffstown Garden Club and the NH Federation of State Garden Clubs Board, I look forward to working again with them.

Garden Clubs Host Landscape Designer Gordon Hayward

Local Garden Clubs Join Forces to Bring Renowned Landscape Designer to Bedford

 One of the missions of local garden clubs is to educate the public and promote gardening skills and knowledge.  To that end, garden clubs from Amherst, Bedford, Goffstown, Hollis, Hooksett, Manchester, Merrimack and Milford New Hampshire have combined their resources to bring nationally renowned landscape designer and author, Gordon Hayward, to Bedford.  Mr. Hayward will share his expertise with the community when he presents a program entitled The Intimate Garden at Bedford High School Theatre on April 19th at 7:00 p.m. 
Hayward and his wife have spent 28 years transforming their own 1 ½ acre Vermont garden from a ramshackle piece of property into the intimate haven we all long to escape to. With the use of over 200 color slides, he will reveal their gardening trials and errors and the garden design expertise they honed in the process.  Mr. Hayward has a reputation for being an engaging speaker who gives practical landscape design advice that can be easily adopted in your own garden.

Goffstown Garden Club March Meeting

The Goffstown Community Garden Club will be holding its monthly meeting on Thursday, March 1, at 6:30 p.m., at Mountain View Middle School.

The speaker will be Marty Gastrock, a master gardener for the UNH Cooperative Extension.  Her topc will be "Field to Table."

Goffstown Community Garden Club Plant Sale

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 21st. The Goffstown Community Garden Club will be hosting its annual plant sale on the common. Lots of perennials that have been dug from local gardens. All proceeds go towards the GCGC scholarship fund.

Goffstown Garden Club 2011 Scholarship

Goffstown Community Garden Club seeks applicants for Scholarship. The club offers an annual scholarship to a senior from the Goffstown area who plans to major in horticulture, agriculture or education and the environment.  This scholarship is funded by proceeds from the club's annual May plant sale. Customers can pick up perennials, annuals, scrubs at reasonable prices.  The stock is mostly from members gardens and comes with advice about planting and care. This years plant sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 21st  on the Goffstown Common.

Goffstown Garden Club Spring Roadside Cleanup

ROADSIDE CLEAN UP APRIL 17th
Spring has Sprung and the Goffstown Community Garden Club will be breaking out the trash bags for the first roadside clean up of the year!  Sunday, April 17th at 8:00am volunteers will be meeting in front of the Hillsborough County Nursing Home.  For details, call Carol Croasdale at 497-2182.

Very interesting subjects this month, including Late Blooming Perennials Everyone Should Have, Invasive Plants vs. Native Plants, Starting a Vegetable Garden, Book Revies, and TWIG Upcoming Events.  I really love this newsletter and I strongly recommend that everyone take a look.  Paula Kovecses creates charming landscapes, but her monthly newsletter is special for everyone, even non-gardeners like me who just want to look at the pictures and dream!
