Artist Statement “Heatstrokes” Ann Trainor Domingue
The heat, sunlight, air, color palette, geography, weather, island life,
flowers, fish, waterfront, people, and language have all contributed to
this series. I feel I have only scratched the surface of what inspires me
about the Caribbean--in particular St. Martin, Barbados, and Tortola.
My travels to the islands has always been an overwhelming experience in
color overload-- a joyful thing for sure. Capturing details and inspiring
landscapes and local scenes by camera along with on-site (plein air)
sketches, I hold on to these little impressions until I sense that I am
ready to work on a series of pieces that embody my point of view.
Being a lifelong New Englander surrounded by neutral grays and muted
tones, the eye-popping cacophony of color of the islands is quite a jolt.
There is nothing shy about color in paradise.
Enjoy the heat.
