Mt. View Middle School presented local author and publisher Muriel Dubois to a group of enthusiastic 5th graders recently. Reading Specialist Lisa Jones organized the event with the financial support of the Mountain View Partnership. “It’s good for the students to see how someone lives as an author and what it’s like as a career.”
5th grade students at MVMS are responsible for a complicated research project that takes 2 months to prepare. Ms. Dubois’ visit was scheduled to coincide with this academic event, to help the students see the connection between what they do in the classroom and what they might do for a job in the future. Ms. Dubois explained the steps she took to research her books, and how important it is for the author to understand their subject. The discussion included travel to different locations, and the need to verify fact from more than one source.
Dubois also emphasized how she is responsible for her own schedule and needs to be careful how she budgets her time. “Who’s the boss of me?” she asked, going on to tell them about the tricks that help her concentrate. The message was clear, that research and preparation are the tools for her success. The Mt. View 5th graders were an attentive audience and left with a fresh perspective on their coming project.
After teaching 4th grade in Nashua for 16 years, Dubois now concentrates on her publishing business and employs 16 writers. “I didn’t know a person could actually be a writer,” she told them, leading to her most important lesson of the day. “Think about what you want to be. Whatever you choose to be, your life is going to be long and you can do more than one thing.”
